York Union Gas Works
The industrialisation of the city in 19th century included new sources of power.
The York Union Gas Company was established in 1836 in Hungate, facing the river Foss. They merged with a rival company in 1844, forming the "York United Gas Light Company".
By 1850 the site and buildings depicted in this engraving were no longer used. The principle gas works were then based in Monkgate, around the site of the current Sainsburys supermarket.
