20th Century
The twentieth century saw the city of York continue to be shaped by world events.
In 1942, the city was heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe as part of the notorious Baedeker raids.
1960 saw the opening of the University of York, long overdue for a city which had been a centre of learning since Anglo Saxon times.
And in 1966 the city was given a new vision, as it was recognised for its special ‘character, beauty and historic interest’.
