Anglian Hanging Bowl
Not everything is understood about the objects that are found from Anglian York.
A few of these hanging bowls have been found in England but experts can't agree what they were used for. One theory is that they held holy water.
This one was found back in 1829 in Castleyard, York (the string was added later).
Though we're not sure what it was used for, it's a beautiful object in its own right - click on the picture for a better look.
The decorations appear to be bird-shaped, with the wings finished in silver.
